PORTLAND Red Triangle’s junior membership is continuing to rocket according to club secretary Grant Neven.

The club is running youth training sessions at Reforne every Wednesday night (6pm-8pm) throughout the summer and the top-class coaching is attracting around 45 youngsters from across Weymouth and Portland each time.

Neven said: “Our junior membership has gone up 200 per cent in the last year, which is absolutely superb.

“It has been a result of the Chance to Shine scheme that we have been carrying out in the local schools where we have gone in and provided free coaching sessions.

“That is now being reciprocated with a lot of the children joining the club and everyone involved in the set up deserves a lot of credit for the hard work they continue to put in to make the section such a success.

“When I took over as secretary at Portland Red Triangle we had a lot of good players but we did not have any youngsters coming through.

“Now we have got the likes of Dan Strong and Simon Proffitt who have worked their way up into the first team and the signs for the future are really encouraging.

“Three of the youngsters, Dan, Olly Whisker and Matthew Randell, are even looking to do their level one coaching, which is fantastic.”

Neven has also praised the support of the senior players for giving up their time to come and help develop the budding players at the club.

He added: “We could not do it without them or the likes of Gary Randell, Doc Walker and Rich Stewkesbury, who put an awful lot of hard work in.

“We also could not do it without the parents, who run the kids all over the place and provide fantastic support, and of course Qinetiq, who sponsor the youth section.”
