Feather show for schools

AROUND 100 schoolchildren took to the courts at Redlands Sports Centre for West Dorset School Sports Partnership’s badminton competition.

A total of 20 teams, 15 in the boys’ tournament and five in the girls’ competition, from All Saints, Budmouth, Sir John Colfox and Woodroffe schools played singles and doubles matches against each other during the day.

Wey Valley had two winning teams in the boys’ events, while Woodroffe also scored success in one of the boys’ tournaments, as well as winning the girls’ competition.

Irene Fairley, school sport co-ordinator for Sir John Colfox School, said: “The tournament was a huge success and has enthused my students to run something similar within school.”

Catherine Sertin and Helen Troke were on hand to offer coaching to students when they were not playing matches while the children, aged between 12 and 14, also took responsibility for scoring and organising their teams.

Organiser and senior competition manager Peter McNulty, was delighted with the standard of play and by the way the students behaved and organised themselves.
