GILLINGHAM 1 Chickerell UNITED COLTS 3
THIS was always going to be a David and Goliath affair on paper because of Gillingham’s superior goal difference, but it was David – in the form of Chickerell United Colts – that came out on top.
The Colts showed great desire and determination from the start, closing down Gillingham’s free-flowing play.
With the midfield trio of Harry Doyle, Jake McCarthy and Ben Sandeman holding strong in midfield with some first-class tackling, Gillingham found it hard to work their way into Chickerell’s half.
The home team, against the run of play, had a free-kick on the edge of the area which goalkeeper Aaron Simmonds saw dip just under the crossbar to send Gillingham into the half-time break 1-0 up.
Having gone a goal down, Jack Carter and Jay Anderson both went close to getting an equaliser.
With defenders Ashley Gregory, Ed Legg and Sam Rogers playing key roles in pushing the line forward, the Colts were eventually rewarded with a Carter goal.
Within minutes, the Colts went 2-1 up with a predatory goal by Doyle before catching the home team on the break once more, with Doyle turning provider to set up Carter.
