WEYSPORTS have revealed ambitious plans to try and bring cycle speedway back to Weymouth.

The community sports trust will meet with Weymouth & Portland Borough Council for exploratory talks at an open meeting tonight (7.30pm) at the council offices where anybody interested in getting involved in the project can come along and have their say.

Cycle speedway was launched in England in 1946 when tracks were laid out on bomb sites and has grown in popularity since then.

Weymouth were proud owners of their own track which was situated near the Marsh up until 1993 when it closed down and the town has been without a facility since then.

WeySports’ Tim Davis said: “Our plans are based on having a purpose built state of the art track being built which can be seen as part of the Olympic legacy.

“Extensive market research has been carried out with local children to see if the facility would be used and this has shown how popular it would be.

“If successful in getting a track built, WeySports have assured the council that they would work tirelessly to establish the sport in the town and work closely with schools in the area to develop a cycle speedway in the community scheme.

“Weymouth have produced great riders in the past including former world champion Martyn Hepworth, Jem Dicken and Robin Spicer and it is hoped to enlist the support of these and other former riders to coach the new generation of riders.

“WeySports would love to see a range of people show up tonight including ex-riders, companies who might be interested in assisting with funding, potential sponsors, Weymouth Wildcats’ management and fans and indeed anybody who thinks they can help us deliver a facility the town can be proud of for young and old alike to enjoy.”
