Harriers roar as nine records fall

FOUR athletes have broken a total of nine Weymouth St Paul’s Harriers records this past year.

Ben Westhenry led the way in the under-17 boys with a total of four.

The middle-distance runner excelled in the 800m (1mins 56.1secs), 1,500m (3mins 59.09secs), 1,500m steeplechase (4mins 20.7secs) and the 2,000m steeplechase (6mins 2.01secs).

Tom Austin bagged three in the under-20 men’s section in the 3,000m (9mins 50.06secs), 2,000m steeplechase (6mins 44.5secs) and the 3,000m steeplechase (10mins 50.5secs), while Savannah Evans and Jake Guildford secured one apiece in the under-13 girls’ discus (20.92m) and the under-17 boys’ 5kg shot (13.00m) respectively.

Eight Harriers also made the Top 100 UK national rankings with Westhenry again leading the fleet at number one in both the under-17 men’s 1,500m and 2,000m steeplechase. He is also ranked 16th for the flat 1,500m and 19th for the 800m.

Guildford is ranked 52nd for the shot and 78th for the discus, Evans is ranked 43rd for the discus and 70th for the javelin and Austin is ranked 62nd for the 2,000m steeplechase and 71st for the 3,000m steeplechase.

The other four athletes to make the top 100 were Hannah Westhenry and senior competitors Kevin Archer, Tony Faulkner and Pete Clarke.

Hannah Westhenry is ranked 66th in the under-13 girls’ pentathlon, Archer is placed fourth in the over-55 men’s 1,500m and sixth in the 800m, Faulkner is ranked 14th in the over-60 men’s hammer and 25th in the shot, and Clarke is ranked 25th in the over-65 men’s 5,000m, 28th in the 1,500m and 27th in the long jump.

Dorchester AC members Rachel Dumbrell, Honor Slade, Holly Butt, Alex Wood, Alistair Tuck and Megan Tuck also made an impression in the rankings.

In the under-15 girls’ age group, Dumbrell is ranked 10th in the indoor pole vault and 22nd in the outdoor pole vault while Slade is ranked 56th in the hammer and 98th in the 3,000m.

Butt is ranked 20th in the under-17 women’s 100m and 65th in the 200m, Wood is ranked 91st in the under-13 boys’ 200m, Alastair Tuck is ranked 36th in the under-20 men’s hammer while Megan Tuck is ranked ninth in the under-23 women’s discus and 32nd in the hammer.
