SOL Gilday-Evans came out on top in a brutal battle at Cheltenham.
The Dorchester & District ABC boxer fought to the bitter end as both he and home member Ibrahim Berisha gave everything in a front of a packed audience and guest of honour Neville Brown – a former British middleweight champion and Lonsdale Belt winner.
Gilday-Evans, 16, was up against a much more experienced opponent and felt the force of Berisha’s stinging left jab in the opening round.
But the county town teenager soon found his feet and by the second round he let rip with heavy shots that had the Cheltenham boxer reeling.
Berisha was then pinned on the ropes following a lengthy exchange of combination shots but he refused to give in.
Gilday-Evans upped the tempo once more in the final round with some punishing jabs.
Both boys displayed the scars of battle, but it was Gilday-Evans who had his hand raised in victory.
Delighted coach Jon Jo Look said: “I wouldn’t have driven a 300-hundred mile round trip if I didn’t think he was ready.”
Head coach Ben Geyser added: “It’s pleased me no end to see Sol’s win. There’s no doubt both boys put up a great show, the appreciation from the spectators showed that it was an exceptional bout.”
