THE newest Weymouth Cougars team stretched their unbeaten run in the Dorset and Wiltshire Ability Counts League to 19 games at the sixth and final league meeting of the season at Chippenham. The Cougars captured the Championship League title after stiff opposition from Bournemouth, Poole, Dexters and Swindon.

In their first season in the league, the team of 16 to 18-year-olds have gone from strength to strength.

The team have played 24 matches of which they have won 15, drawn seven and lost just two all season.

Manager and coach Al Newman said: “It's pleasing to see how quick the lads have gelled together and their confidence is sky high.

“To bring a group of teenagers together and form them into a league winning side in their first season has surpassed my expectations, but sums up their grit and determination. “A big thank you is expressed to John Bradshaw of bramsracing.com for the team kit.

“The kit gave the team a sense of pride and increased their team spirit and confidence.

"Thanks also go to Helen Pearson and Nigel Thorne for their assistance in coaching and transport throughout the season and more importantly the players Chris Bartlett, Ash Hadfield, Joel Milne, Andy Oldershaw, Liam Thorne, Brendan Butcher, Ross Pettit, Tyler McWalter, Dan Kiy and Jake Male.”

The Cougars are looking to strengthen for next season and if possible would like to compete in both divisions of the league.
