Warriors on world stage
MILLFIELD INVITE: Dorset athletes who have been invited to the Modern Pentathlete World Cup at Millfield School, Street, today
MILLFIELD INVITE: Dorset athletes who have been invited to the Modern Pentathlete World Cup at Millfield School, Street, today

YOUNG athletes from Weymouth, Dorchester and Puddletown will rub shoulders with the world's best at Millfield School in Street over the next three days.

The county's top performers have been invited to take part in an elite biathlon at the Modern Pentathlon World Cup and 12 of the chosen squad are members of West Dorset Warriors Swimming Club, which holds its training sessions in both Bridport and Dorchester.

James Dawson (Weymouth College), Rosie Smith, Olivia Thornton, Grace Kirby, Scott Civil, Kelley Ireland (Thomas Hardye School), Peter Horne, Peter Thornton (St Osmund's Middle School), Hugh Ireland (St Andrew's Primary School), Matthew Fry (Thorners School), Olivia Freeman (St Mary's School) and Laura Chitty (All Saints' School) will all represent Dorset and it promises to be an invaluable experience.

West Dorset's biathlon co-ordinator Stuart Dawson said: "This is a marvellous opportunity for the children to see the very best pentathletes in the world, and to actually compete at the World Cup is very special indeed.

"It's the last major pentathlon event in the UK before the Olympics in Beijing, so the competition will be fierce to win the honour of a place on the Olympic team. As the host nation, Great Britain has the advantage of fielding 12 male and 12 female athletes so it's also a chance to see some of the very best home-grown talent.

"In past years when I have been to the Pentathlon World Cup it's been very exciting, the horse riding in particular is full of drama and the fencing is fast and furious. I know the Warriors will enjoy both the challenge of competing on the world stage and also the spectacle of the event.

"The Press will be attending, including national and local TV, all hoping to see the current World and Olympic champions who will be taking part.

"The event starts today and will run through to Sunday and spectator entry is free, so anyone can come along and watch."

West Dorset Warriors train at both the Thomas Hardye Leisure Centre in Dorchester and at the Bridport Leisure Centre and welcome swimmers and athletes of all levels. If you are interested contact Janet Hewitt on 01305 266175 or go to wdwarriors.org.uk
