GEORGE Spracklen was warmly praised following his history-making debut for Dorset in the Lubramine Middleton Cup.
Playing only 15 days after his 13th birthday, the Dorchester member became the youngest bowler ever to represent the county in the competition, a record previously held by Ben Steadman of Greenhill who made his first appearance some 20 years ago at the age of 14.
Though the prospect of a winning start looked promising for lead Spracklen when his rink, skipped by Barry Patterson, were 5-2 ahead at six ends and later 7-6, they fell behind at halfway and never recovered as Mark Dyer's Wiltshire foursome romped in 31-14.
However, the Dorset teenager acquitted himself so well that team manager Brian Shepherd said: "George did a good job at lead and definitely retains his place for the last match against Cornwall.
"Players like him are our future and as our hopes of qualifying had gone it was an ideal chance to experiment with the side and see what he could do.
"George was the most consistent player in the rink and showed a lot of confidence for such a young bowler."
