ST ANDREW'S overcame holders Southill in a closely contested final to win the 2008 Pengilly Cup.

For the eight teams of mini-tennis players from Weymouth primary schools, there was plenty of excitement and nail-biting finishes at the annual Pengilly Cup.

Now in its sixth year, this popular event attracted nearly 50 children from Years Three and below, most of whom had played little tennis before.

A variety of events were on offer, and there was even a tennis quiz where competitors could score points for their school team.

After three hours of non-stop activity, Southill faced St John's in one semi-final with two previous winners, St Andrew's and Radipole, in the other.

In some tense matches, Southill just squeezed past St John's on points difference to face an inexperienced St Andrew's in the final.

Despite winning both doubles matches, St Andrew's were held to a 3-3 overall verdict by a determined Southill team.

But a points countback saw St Andrew's claim the 2008 Pengilly Cup by the narrowest of margins.

Their coach, teaching assistant Lorna Morrissey, was delighted with her young players. She said: "From playing after school on one small court, the children have quickly developed their tennis skills and grown in confidence as the tournament progressed. We just wanted to do our best, we never expected to win."

All competitors received a prize and an invitation to join the junior coaching sessions at Weymouth Tennis Club.
