SO, Tate Modern is to invade the Relief Road, by way of rocks perched on poles, a concept that might have been appropriate in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland.
Throughout the decades the philosophy of landscaping of new highways, passing through rural surroundings, has been treatment to respect their character. This bizarre proposal is totally alien to that philosophy.
If on the other hand these boulders were to be set into the cutting slopes in informal groups, it would create an unobtrusive arrangement, while reflecting the source of the stones. We can only hope that sanity prevails.
