County town is clearly not a city

What fool put Dorchester’s name forward to be nominated for city status in the Queen’s diamond jubilee year?

Are they under the misapprehension that the colossal West Dorset District Council building in Charles Street is our new cathedral?

Whats a cathedral got to do with it?

Its because it used to be considered that an area which had a Cathedral should be called a City. This was abolished in the last century.

There is no reason at all that Dorchester shouldn't be considered for award of City status (Although the competition is high)

It has little to do with population - The City of London has one of the smallest populations and of course more locally, Wells is the smallest City based on population.

The 3 towns battling for City status in the South West (There are 25 candidates nationally) are Bournemouth, Dorchester and St Austell. Dorchester gets my vote

.
The town was asked to put itself forward by the organisers, due to the town's history. Given that towns such as Bournemouth, Bolton and Reading are putting themselves forward, there's no chance of Dorch winning... but at least it gives the local population something new to complain about eh?!

so whats the big deal anyway, it will only lead to the council and councilors patting themselves on the back and partying about how great they are.

I'm surprised that Dorchester even made it on to the list??

Why should Bournemouth be classed as a city and Dorchester not?

Of course, the biggest loser will be our Football team who will have a lot of merchandising to change.

I would have thought that was obvious?

Bournemouth has the size and importance of a city, not to mention attractions that make it worth visiting.

Dorchester has the mind set of a large village (a bit sloooow) and the most impressive thing about the town, is the bypass around it.

So if size is an issue then why is Wells a city? Why Truro? The City of London is smaller than Dorchester. Lancaster is much the same size as Dorchester.

Importance? Yeah, you are probably right that Bournemouth is more important than Dorchester. In the Golden jubilee competition the only South West Town to enter was Swindon but the eventual winner was Preston.

However, Dorset is one of the few counties not to have a City amongst its population and so with luck we may have one later this year.

I agree, Dorset should have it's own City.

But Dorchester instead of Bournemouth, really ?!?!

Personally I wouldn't put yourselves in the firing line for all the confused tourists turning up to see this new city.

After all, Bournemouth has a wealth of entertainments, nightlife, restaurants, and the best shopping for miles around.

What on earth has Dorchester to offer.....Tesco's ?

It's not just about shopping and going out. It's about history, culture and much much more. I agree, Dorset does need a City but it should definitely not be Bournemouth. Bournemouth's history lies in Hampshire, only becoming part of Dorset in 1974.
As the County Town of Dorset, Dorchester would be the ideal choice in my humble opinion.
