REV Jack Elwin has for about 25 years served our parishes faithfully as a retired priest helping out the incumbent, and there have been four in his time, when needed.

On Sunday, in Portesham, we all wished Jack and his wife Anne a fond ‘farewell’ as he retired from his ministry in our benefice.

We will miss his keen intellect and his thought provoking sermons.

23 years ago when we came to the village, the benefice was in an interregnum – no vicar.

It was on Jack’s door that I knocked looking for someone to bless our brand new house before we moved in.

He gathered two Abbotsbury churchwardens and came over to carefully fulfil the request so that we could happily go ahead with the move.

Just one of his kindnesses that this Abbotsbury resident will never forget.

AFTER many, many years I am retiring as the Echo Community News Correspondent for Abbotsbury.

Is there anyone in our village who would like to serve his or her community and take over this little worthwhile job? It is not an onerous position; there is a Wednesday midnight cut off for copy to be sent into the paper for publishing in the following Monday’s issue.

Copy with or without photographs is emailed to the Echo website first of all and the Community News Editor then extracts what he needs for the main paper. (He doesn’t always get it correct but you can always hope).

The Echo has its own way of doing things, are supportive and you will be guided through the simple technology, Echo-speak etc Please contact me for more details if you are interested on 01305 871716 or email me and I will pass your details on to my editor.

I have enjoyed my years working for you all and thank everyone who has given me news.

I will continue until my replacement is found but news may not go in as regularly as it has been doing.
