• THE speaker for the last meeting of Broadmayne and West Knighton WI was unable to attend, but, thrown on their own resources members rose to the occasion, and the evening became a very merry one.

Composed limericks were read out by their authors, with imaginatively invented endings, and Katy Smith told of her experience, with two others, of taking part in the County New Members’ meeting in Dorchester.

They had all enjoyed it and Katy said that joining the W.I. had opened doors for her.

Members then took the opportunity to discuss the future of the group meetings, and the national resolutions that had been short listed, which included, more money to be allocated for research to prevent the disastrous reduction of the bee population continuing; the reinstatement of in-house cleaning of hospital wards, and concern about the creation of poly clinics which could badly damage existing G.P. services, especially in rural areas.

Various people then told amusing anecdotes of happenings in their past lives, including a member who had run the Lord Chancellor’s Court in London for a number of years.

Defendants usually produced interesting cases and some of their peccadilloes were related.

Another member told of an occasion when she and her boyfriend had been locked in a country church.

They nearly had to spend the night there, a situation she knew would have horrified her parents in those days, but they very luckily found a key which let them out of a back door of the church, so scandal had been averted!

The speaker at the next meeting on Thursday, February 12 in the village hall will be Richard Backwell, who will be talking about Nepal.

The social time will be ‘The best and worst of holidays’ and members are asked to bring accounts of their experiences.
