NICHOLAS Hytner directs a thrilling promenade staging of Shakespeare's political thriller of corrupted ambition and murderous intent, broadcast live from the noise-filled auditorium of The Bridge Theatre in London.
NT LIVE: Julius Caesar is showing at local cinemas today at 7pm.
The rabble-rousing citizens of Rome greet the return of Julius Caesar (David Calder) with a street party.
However, the political elite are visibly alarmed by the autocrat's dizzying popularity and they secretly plot his assassination. Cassius (Michelle Fairley) lights the fuse on a bloodthirsty coup, aided by intellectual Brutus (Ben Whishaw) and various members of Caesar's inner circle.
The leader's right-hand man Mark Antony (David Morrissey) is spared a bullet at the last moment and he cleverly turns the tables on the conspirators, bringing civil war to the streets of the capital as friends and neighbours turn against one another with bloody and tragic consequences.
*Showing at Weymouth Cineworld, Dorchester Plaza and Dorchester Odeon at 7pm. Call the box office for tickets.
