FILM enthusiasts are set to enjoy another season of entertainment, as the Dorchester Film Society announces its new programme.

The 2019-2020 season kicks on Thursday, September 12, with a screening of the award-winning Polish romance, Cold War. This epic tale of doomed love in 1950s Poland saw Pawel Pawlikowski win Best Director at Cannes Film Festival in 2018.

Once again, Dorchester Film Society have developed a varied programme of international and arthouse films from Europe, Asia, the Middle East and the US. Formed in 1958, the society aims to give local audiences the opportunity to see the best of world cinema, paying particular attention to films which have not been screened in mainstream cinemas.

Another highlight of the programme is Shoplifters, the Japanese film which won the Palme D'Or at Cannes last year. The story follows a family living on the outskirts of Tokyo, who turn to petty theft in an effort to escape poverty.

Also being shown is The Sisters Brothers, a 2018 American-French western dark comedy featuring Rutger Hauer’s final film appearance. Set in Western American in 1851, brothers Eli and Charlie Sisters are gunfighters hired by a wealthy businessman, known as the Commodore, who tasks them to kill a man. What ensues is an adventure that tests the strength of family ties.

Concluding the series in March 2020 will be film entitled Styx, a German-Austrian drama directed by Wolfgang Fischer. A busy doctor sets off to sail from Gibraltar to the small island of Ascension in the Atlantic, only to encounter a sinking, overcrowded boat of refugees. Knowing that more than 100 people may be at risk of drowning, the doctor begins to help, only to realise that it may be impossible to save them all.

Screenings will take place at Dorchester Corn Exchange on Thursdays and Dorchester Odeon on Mondays, with all showings starting at 7.30pm.

Membership to the Dorchester Film Society, which includes access to all 18 films, costs £55. Members will be able to request guest tickets for £5 each.
