THE Wessex piano quartet (Catrin Win Morgan, violin; Stephanie Chambers viola; Sally Flann, cello; and Duncan Honeybourne, right, piano) played 19th and 20th century music.
Opening the programme was Max Bruch’s Romance for viola and piano – exquisitely played with its long flowing phrases and melancholic feel.
This was followed by Reverie for violin and piano by Angela Morley, composer of the film music for Watership Down.
Fluctuating between excitement and contemplation, this piece showed great technical command from both players.
The climax of the recital was a truly wonderful performance of Dvorak’s piano quartet no. 2 in Eb (opus 87).
All four musicians were involved in this masterpiece and their sound was perfectly balanced.
Dvorak’s native Czech folk melody was interwoven with strong chordal sections and much syncopation, giving a real feeling of time and place.
