A SPINE-TINGLING concert of moving music is coming to Dorchester.

The Dorchester Choral Society will be singing Michael Tippett’s A Child of Our Time at St Mary’s Church in Edward Road on Saturday, November 1 from 7.30pm.

This work will be sung in Dorchester with the county town’s twin town choirs from Luebbecke, Germany and Bayeux, France.

Included in the programme are Bach’s compelling First Unaccompanied Cello Suite, soloist Thomas Carroll, and Haydn’s boisterous Te Deum.

The soprano soloist is Abbi Temple, who is London-based but started out in Dorset.

Abbi now works throughout Britain and Europe in ensembles or as a soloist.

A week before, the choral society will join the other choirs in Luebbecke to sing Tippett’s masterpiece as a commemoration of the start of the First World War.

A Child of Our Time is a memorial to the innocent victims of war and the choruses of Negro Spirituals are the hymns of the oppressed. Director Christine Page said: “It will be poignant, especially in this time of conflict, to sing the story of all persecuted and displaced peoples.”

As part of the celebration of the reuniting of Europe post-1945 the society will also sing together a No Man’s Land carol – Stille Nacht (Silent Night) for North German radio, to be played at Christmas time in all three countries.

It will be played by local Dorset churches to start their carol services.

Society member Anthony Gannon said: “This reminds us of the moment in war when troops from both sides, German and British, observed a truce on Christmas Day in 1914 to play football and sing carols, including Stille Nacht, to show that even in war humanity can shine through.”

Tickets are available from Harmony Music in Trinity Street, Dorchester.

They cost £15 for the central aisle or £12 for side aisle seats.

Some tickets should be available on the door on the night. For more information on the forthcoming event please contact Anthony Gannon on 01305 262005.
