ROGER Daltrey’s stuttered howl from 1965 of hoping to die before he got old has, fortunately for him and fellow Who legend Pete Townsend, still not transpired.

Sadly, things didn’t work out so well for bandmates Keith Moon who exploded into eternity in 1978 and John Entwistle, thundering off to that great bass rig in the sky in 2002.

At their zenith, from say 1968 to 1975, The Who were arguably the greatest band on the planet with few coming close to touching the power, drama and raw excitement of their live shows.

Yes, you can watch YouTube clips and archive footage of the band in their pomp, but it takes a quality tribute band to recreate their power and majesty, which is just what Johnny Warman’s Magic Bus outfit do, in spades and are a more than impressive Substitute (Jeez, this stuff writes itself...).

Frontman and impresario Johnny has a pool of top musos for his stable of shows which include The British Invasion, which celebrates the era when the original Britpop ruled the world from 1964 to 1966, The Mods & Rockers Show, which extends the remit into the 1970s and his Motown tribute Four Bills and a Ben, hailed by Sir Elton John as ‘the best soul band on the planet’.

The pool of top musos, you say? Well, how about George Michael’s sax player Andy Hamilton, former XTC guitarist Dave Gregory and top session drummer Greg Pringle, for starters… BOOM.

But it’s the oncoming storm of The Total Who Show which is heading to the Weymouth Pavilion tomorrow night, Saturday, November 11, and with a set list that includes all the biggies, My Generation, Baba O’Reilly, Behind Blue Eyes, Won’t Get Fooled Again, 5.15 and many, many more, you know you’re in for a terrific evening of windmill-guitar thrashing and all-action entertainment.

Tickets for tomorrow’s show are £15 from the box office on 01305 783225.

Moving on, and how do you like to spend your Sunday afternoons?

Walking off that roast dinner with the family?

Down the pub to watch the footie? A lazy sofa day reading the Sunday papers and watching a film?

Me? I like to spend the afternoon in the company of five scantily-clad lovelies, hustled down to my undercrackers after an all-night poker session with the aforementioned maidens and listening to alt-country while emerging, shaking, from a bourbon-induced hangover from hell.

If that tickles your fancy, and there’s every reason why it should, you need to make a note in your diary for next Sunday, November 19, at 2pm when Dana Immanuel and the Stolen Band hitch up their wagon outside Café Jagos in Dorchester.

(Well, not right outside as that would case a traffic issue by the lights in High West Street, obviously…)

As you can see from the picture on this page, Dana and the girls are partial to a light sherry and a game of whist with the vicar on a Sunday, and they also enjoy entertaining you with their choice selection of bluegrass and country tunes.

I’d say it was a must-see gig. After church, of course.

And finally, if you’d like your live music event listed here, send details to gigs@dorsetecho.co.uk Till next time…
