SO what do you think metal moshers get up to when they’re not turning it up to 11 and chewing the heads of bats on stage?

Well, some are most likely to be found sacrificing goats and/or virgins, growing a beard, having a tattoo done somewhere on their anatomy or possibly busy making the beast with two backs in the privacy of their own dungeon. Ideally all at the same time.

Or they could be putting their undoubted talents to even greater use and help raise money for a cause that has never been more current and vital.

Yes, those golden hearted promotion luvvies at Realm of Wrongness are staging a night of metal at Finns in Weymouth next Friday, September 21, with four top quality bands with a view to raising money for the Veterans Hub in Weymouth.

The hub, on Portland Road, Weymouth, was set up by Andy Price who, as an ex-serviceman, soon realised there was a need for more support for military personnel as they make the transition to civilian life.

It can be a very, very tough journey: Just ask anyone who’s either done it or is doing it.

So not only is it a cause worth supporting, it also promises to be a night of ear-splitting hi-jinks with Weymouth’s very own riff conjurors Fissure of Riddles topping the bill at Finns with support coming from Hummune, who hail from Hampshire and will be unleashing tracks from their latest album Face the Fall.

It’s also worth noting that Hummune singer Stu Woodward’s beard is actually bigger than his bonce, which is an impressive achievement.

Also on the bill are the brilliantly-named stoner punks Trevor’s Head, who claim to come from the sewers of Surrey and list dirty chicken and space gherkins among their influences.

Fair play.

And opening the whole she-bang next Friday are hard-hitting funk-metallers No Worth of Man.

All this for just £3 admission? It’s a bargain, I tells ‘ee… Moving on, and this Sunday, September 16, it’s the WARM festival in Dorchester’s Borough Gardens which was postponed last month because of an inclement forecast.

Let’s hope it stays dry for this annual fundraiser for the Stevie Charles Help a Friend charity. There’s a decent line-up too with swingin’ Neil Coad getting the party started from 12.30pm, followed by rockers Trip Wizard, alt-country Cherry Pickers, Dylan homage-ists The Million Dollar Bash and Aqila.

And finally, a drop roll please and hi-hats off to top tub thumper Grant Holford who has made it through to the finals of the south coast Battle of the Drummers contest which will be held at The 1865 venue in Southampton on Friday, November 23.

Weymouth’s tallest drummer, who can clearly be seen behind his mahoosive Tama kit with bands Bad Intention and Tripod, is in with a chance of £1,000 of recording studio time, a slot at a drum clinic, and shed-loads of drum shizzle and merchandise.

There’s talk of a bus going up to support Grant, so if you fancy it, have a word with him at a Tripod or Bad Intention gig.

Till next time…
