THE rich musical heritage of Weymouth’s live music scene is being revived again with another epic fundraising evening at the town’s Centenary Club.

Make a date to dig out your flairs and back comb what’s left of your hair next Friday, September 28 for what promises to be another unforgettable stagger down Memory Lane via Amnesia Avenue with such bands as Blind Harvest, Violin Shoppe, XS, Crystal Ship, and Eleventh Hour.

Between them they span an epoch of music history of more than half a century with bands who were on the circuit in the mid-1960s right up to the present day with Eleventh Hour, who, as the name suggests, have got together for this gig just two minutes before you read this.

As Chris Dean, one the event organisers, tells me: “We’ve had a couple of smaller reunions which two bands playing but this time we’ve got five.

“We’ve got musicians coming from as far afield as Wales, Scotland and France for this and we’ll be raising money for the Dorset County Hospital Cancer Appeal and the Somerset and Dorset Air Ambulance.”

Tickets, and you’d better hurry up as there’s not too many left, are £10 and available from the venue on 01305 839310.

Incidentally, the organisers are still open to raffle prizes and sponsorship deals, so if you can help out, give Chris a call on 07774 792 736 And talking of old rockers, there’s an event coming up at The Ropemakers in Bridport next Sunday, September 30, to remember the late Mick Burt who was the original drummer with the great Chas and Dave, back in their glory days of 1975 to as recent as 2009.

Sadly Mick passed away in 2014 and his son Tony is holding a series of gigs touring across the country to remember his dad, and raise funds for two charities he says are ‘absolutely amazing’: Parkinson’s UK and Dementia UK.

Tony is bringing the tour to places where he knows local musicians, and plenty of people from the West Dorset area will be performing on the night. He is also bringing his dad’s iconic yellow Premier drum kit along.

Tony said: “Dad really had some stories. He played with Cliff Bennett and the Rebel Rousers, he played the Star Club in Hamburg with the Beatles, he supported and played with Bo Diddley. That’s how he met Chas, who was playing on bass. He played for Jerry Lee Lewis in 1968 and toured with Eric Clapton in 1980.”

And finally, from old rockers of times past to young rockers of the future, well some of them, at least… It’s All Saints School’s festival of arts and music tomorrow, Saturday, September 22 and, true to form the school on Portland Road, Weymouth, has got a cracking line-up.

There’s Hot Bacon, Blazing Strings, The Omega Project, Toby de Kretser, and Dr Strangebrew on the bill and also the remarkable youngsters from The Undecided who recently impressed Glastonbury supremo Michael Eavis at a gig in Somerset.

It’s just £3 on the school gate from 11am.

Till next time…
