IT’S got glitter, dancing, songs and comedy film clips from the past, so why is it not the hottest show of the year?

Ten dancers and four singers make up the cast of this all singing, all dancing tribute to Hollywood composers George Gershwin, Cole Porter and Irving Berlin which starts off by paying homage to Fred Astaire and then immediately goes downhill until after the interval.

The costumes are sparkly, the dancers are terrific, the iconic songs like I Got Rhythm and Ain’t Misbehavin are wonderfully familiar but the onstage atmosphere is palpably leaden for the first half of the show, perhaps because the orchestral accompaniment and much of the singing is pre-recorded which removes at a stroke any opportunity for even the slightest variation by the performers onstage.

That’s the bad news, the good news is that Strictly Come Dancing partners Robin Windsor and Anya Garnis provide a welcome lift to the proceedings with their exotic routines and once the second half gets under way, things just keep getting better and better for the cast.

Top spots for the audience were a breathtaking men’s tap routine followed by a stunning hand jive session by all 10 dancers that raised cheers from the audience in a show that offers considerable professional talent and just needs a few live musicians to take the whole thing to new heights.

n Robin Windsor is a British professional Latin and Ballroom dancer, best known for his appearances in the BBC television series Strictly Come Dancing.

Gordana Grandosek has taken over from Anya Garnis as the female dance lead for the remainder of the show’s run in Bournemouth.

The touring production continues at Bournemouth Pavilion until Saturday August 22.
