Last week if someone had asked me to name a singer who has won three Ivor Novello awards, had numerous number one hits and sold over 10 Million records in a single year, I would probably not have got round to naming Gilbert O’Sullivan. Yet he has done just that and much more.

The man himself appeared at The Pavilion to promote his latest album Gilbertville and showed why he has enjoyed such success. Backed by a full 11-piece band and looking much younger than his 64 years, Gilbert played for the best part of three hours, including a short interval, performing a set that spanned his whole career.

Looking relaxed he chatted to the crowd between songs and certainly proved value for money. The set included seven songs from the new album that was well-received by the appreciative crowd but it was the old favourites that finally got them on their feet.

Clair, Alone Again, Ooh Wakka Do, Matrimony and show closer Get Down sent the crowd away happy. An hour after the show ended Gilbert was still in the lobby posing for photos and signing everything passed his way by the large group of fans.
