THE sounds of the Balkans are on their way to rural Dorset.
Award-winning Balkan band She’Koyokh will perform at Buckland Newton Village Hall
on June 3.
They started out in London’s East End as a popular street band in 2001, but quickly progressed to performing internationally with the support of a Millennium Award via the Jewish Music Institute, with engagements at Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, the Jewish Cultural Festival in Munich and on BBC television and radio.
In 2008 the band were awarded first prize at the International Jewish Music Festival and, in the same year, were joined by acclaimed Turkish vocalist, Cigdem Aslan.
Their repertoire soon expanded to include songs from all over the Balkans and into Mediterranean and Turkish realms.
Hailed by Songlines magazine as “Britain’s best klezmer and Balkan band”, She’Koyokh’s acclaimed evolution has led to TV appearances and live sessions on BBC Radio 3’s ‘In Tune’ and ‘World on 3’, as well as performances at festivals including as Glastonbury, Cheltenham and WOMAD.
In March 2014 She’Koyokh released their third album, Wild Goats & Unmarried Women, to critical acclaim, receiving 5 star reviews in the Evening Standard and 4 stars in the Guardian.
Expect a night of exhilarating music for singing, listening and dancing to as She’Koyokh embark on a fascinating musical journey, encompassing soulful Gypsy melodies, toe-tapping Yiddish music, Balkan dances, Turkish ballads, and virtuosic solos.
Performed with huge energy and passion, early booking is recommended to avoid disappointment for this one special appearance in Dorset.
The performance starts at 7.30pm. Call 01300 345455 for tickets or see artsreach.co.uk
