THIS year Weymouth Operatic Society's Christmas Show will be the last to be performed under the group's current name.

The vocal ensemble is changing its name to Wessex Musical Theatre to mark its change of musical direction from operatic.

Christmas show The Greatest Christmas takes place from Wednesday, December 5 to Saturday, December 8 at Hope Church in Trinity Street, Weymouth.

As always the show coincides with the church's 15th annual Christmas Tree festival, which will see 26 trees, each sponsored by local charities displayed in the church.

The first act of The Greatest Christmas features a selection of music from well known films and shows.

As well as a tribute to The Greatest Showman, a James Bond medley and a Queen medley will be performed. The second act offers a more traditional helping of Christmas songs and carols as well as festive poetry and audience participation in the ever-popular Christmas Wrap feature.

Operatic Society spokesman Angela Elliott said: "We have added an extra evening this year (Saturday) because of its popularity last year when extra seating had to be added to accommodate the large audience.

"This is a delightful venue and the effect of glass reflections on decorated Christmas trees provides a magic and enchanting setting for our show."

Weymouth Operatic Society was formed in 1921 and its first production, HMS Pinafore, took place at Weymouth Pavilion in May 1922.

Previous productions include many Gilbert and Sullivan operettas and traditional musicals and in recent years shows such as Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita and Spamalot. As well as the name change, the operatic society will be increasing its appearances at local events, including next year's Chesil Rocks Festival.

Tickets cost £8 for adults and £5 for children and are available from Londis Harbour Stores, WOS members and on the door.
