THREE talented young musicians will perform at Weymouth Choral Society's Spring Concert on Saturday, March 30.

The audience will be able to enjoy a performance of Mozart's Requiem in a concert that will also feature young musicians, Hannah McFarlane (cello), Joe Lyndley (bassoon) and Charlotte Ballard (flute).

Four experienced vocal soloists will join the society for the Requiem: Caroline Thomas (soprano); Emily James (alto); Andrew Morris (tenor) and Jonathan Prentice (bass).

Mozart’s Requiem is one of the most famous musical compositions ever written – its fame stems not only from the beauty of the music itself but also the speculations and stories behind its composition.

Mozart’s life ended before he could complete the Requiem and his widow, needing to secure the financial commission from the work, turned to Franz Xaver Sussmayr to complete it in a ‘traditional’ style that might be presented as Mozart’s music. However this choral work may have developed, what we now enjoy is a truly outstanding and emotive piece, presenting the trials and turmoils of our journey through life and the contemplation of mortality and the question of life after death. The movements of the Requiem portray this ebb and flow, tension and release, leaving us with the inevitable conclusion that these existential questions will remain unresolved.

Weymouth Choral Society will be supported by a full orchestra for the Requiem performance, which will form the second half of the concert. Helen Brind will direct.

The first half will showcase the talents of three young musicians.

Hannah McFarlane, aged 16, is rapidly becoming known as an exceptional cellist and has featured in many concerts in Dorset and further afield. She will play movements from Haydn’s Cello Concerto in D major.

Joe Lyndley, 16, a student at The Thomas Hardye School, is an accomplished bassoon player. He will be playing movements from Mozart’s Bassoon Concerto in Bb Major.

Charlotte Ballard, 17, is a fine flautist and she has chosen a beautiful Sonata by J C Bach.

Louise Dukes will accompany at the piano.
