WITH the summer holidays just around the corner, children can embrace their creative sides with the Artsreach summer programme of activities.

Running from July 26 until August 30, this year is inspired by The Lost Words, Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris's illustrated book which uses the magic of words and images to revive our love of nature. With a mix of events across Dorset, from music and theatre to outdoor adventures and storytelling, there promises to be something for everyone to enjoy.

Children can dabble in language learning at Sarah Butterworth's Woodspeak Creators sessions, where they can also bring to life woodland sculptures from bendy wires and coloured tissue. If outdoor adventures are of more interest, Dorset Forest Schools will be running activities ranging from making leaf-print bunting and designing copper jewellery, to willow-weaving and natural painting.

Budding artists won't be short of activities to choose from, from Abigail Thommes's Graffiti Experience to Vicky Ashford's Wild Art session, where children can create sculptures or mobiles using foraged materials such as leaves, seed pods and pine cones. Local artist Fran Quinlan will also be running a Let's Get Recycling craft workshop, whilst sculptor Darrell Wakelam shares his skills in creating 3D animals.

For a less hands-on experience, Martin Maudsley will lead a lively storytelling performance featuring traditional folktales and legends, while Squashbox Theatre invites you to enter the Curious Creatures Wildlife Park and uncover the mysteries of the animal kingdom in their brand new show.

Full details on all of the events, including recommended ages, times, locations and prices, can be found in the Artsreach Summer Activities programme which is available at tourist information centres and libraries.

Artsreach is Dorset's touring arts organisation, aiming to give rural communities all over the county the opportunity to experience high quality arts events in their local towns and villages. The charity receives regular funding from organisations such as Arts Council England and local councils, which help keep prices low and accessible to all.
