A GENTLE tale of ordinary folk is coming to Weymouth’s bijou Warehouse Theatre.

The Cemetery Club, by Ivan Menchell, is a sweet story about three widows and is being directed by club veteran Dennis Dunford.

This comedy, with much Jewish humour, is about the widows Doris, Ester and Lucille, whose husbands died one after another over just a few years.

The trio of friends, who are all in their fifties, react quite differently to the deaths, but they make it a habit to meet every year at the graves of their husbands and talk about perspectives in their lives.

Dennis said: “It is ever so funny but also very ordinary and innocent and that’s so much of its charm. There are these three women who have been friends for the best part of 20 years and they have always gone about with their husbands. But now their husbands have gone on and they all cope with it in different ways.”

The three merry widows are played by Jan Dench, Daphne Payne and Anne White, while Margaret Shaw and Dave Moore take on two supporting roles.

Dennis said: “It is one of those plays that has something for everybody. It is sweet and funny, although there are moments of sadness too, but it is a look at life as it really is.”

The Cemetery Club is at the Warehouse Theatre in Hope Street, Weymouth from Wednesday to Saturday, July 27 to 30. Performances are at 7.30pm and tickets are £7.50 from 01305 750050 and 782964.
