FIGHT your way through the traffic of the West End or through the crowds on the tube, whatever the cost may be, and surrender yourself to the luxurious Hyatt Regency London – The Churchill.

I apologise for misquoting the great wartime leader, but I must draw on Sir Winston for inspiration as he is a major influence at this 5-star Marylebone hotel, part of Hyatt's flagship brand, overlooking Portman Square and a stone's throw from bustling Oxford Street and the Marble Arch end of Hyde Park. It's time to treat yourself and head to our great capital and live like Churchill, if only for a bit.

I suppose if you are going to base your luxury hotel on someone, you can't go too far wrong with the man who led us to victory in the Second World War and helped saved us from the Nazis, while also being a canny politician and purveyor of great witticisms.

There is no connection as such (it opened a few years after he died), rather than the hotel has chosen to 'honour' Churchill and is influenced, in its dining, decor and facilities, by his 'classic British style', and with subtle nods to his life and legacy.

I hope Churchill won't mind me saying the hotel isn't much to look at from the outside, although the pillared frontage at the entrance gives some indication of the grandiose style within. Approaching on foot (well, we can't all arrive in chauffeur-driven limousines) you walk past Portman Square – private access for residents only including hotel guests where there is a tennis court, playground and jogging track – cross the road and walk past the dedicated fleet of taxis waiting outside ready to whisk guests off around the city, under the roof of the grand entrance area, past the top-hatted doorman and through gold revolving doors.

It's an impressive entrance, and you know you've arrived somewhere special - you step into a spacious lobby full of glass, marble pillars, chandeliers and elegant paintings on the walls, and you're greeted by smiling staff who want to help you.

The 440 sophisticated guestrooms and suites feature deluxe amenities and a quintessentially British design. You can settle into a comfortable room complete with a very comfy bed, 42” flat-screen HDTV, spacious work desk, and luxury bath products.

Now I'm not one to question Churchill's bathroom habits but I do wonder whether the high-tech toilet found in all rooms is something he was used too. This is a contraption which has a heated seat and can sprinkle a little jet of water at your derrière (position and strength can be altered); it's quite a machine. Maybe this was Churchill's secret of success – a lightly sprinkled and warm bottom ready to set him up to tackle the affairs of the day. I must say it didn't inspire me to give a great speech, rather just contemplate a luxurious style of living.

Dining here is everything you would expect at a top-class hotel. Before our evening meal we had a cocktail at the very stylish Churchill Bar & Terrace which has an Art Deco-inspired décor and is inspired by Churchill and his wife Clementine. Here you can sip award-winning craft cocktails The Lover, The Gardener, The Bon Vivant, etc, or sample fine wines, premium spirits, and all the classics, in a glamorous setting. There is a luxe décor, bookshelves curated by Daunt Books and original photographs and love letters adorning the walls. Outside, guests can dine alfresco amid a life-size bronze of a young Churchill as they snuggle up on the heated terrace. You can also purchase a selection of cigars, supplied by the UK’s leading Cuban cigar importer Hunters & Frankau.

We dined at the hotel's Montagu Kitchen, a restaurant with a design inspired by the gardens at Chartwell – Churchill's private home in Kent. The team serve seasonal food using local suppliers and fresh British produce, which 'aims to reconnect diners with nature through simple dishes that bring a little bit of the gardens at Chartwell to the city'. Mains include Dingley Dell Pork Belly, North Atlantic Halibut, and Grilled Portobello mushroom with Isle of Avalon cheese and crispy shallots (my choice – exquisite).

I couldn't help feeling quite the pampered statesman visiting this luxurious hotel, surely one one London's finest.

And as the great man once said, 'I am a man of simple tastes; I am easily satisfied with the best.'
