HUNDREDS of people are flocking to see the Best of Dorset at Weymouth Pavilion.

Attractions, events, businesses and interest groups have united for a tourism and leisure showcase which is on until 4pm today.

This year’s free event, backed by the Dorset Echo, includes more than 40 businesses, organisations and a host of entertainment.

Talented performers from WOW, Let’s Dance and Preston Pantomime Kids will take to the stage with artistic flare showcased from local arts group Artwey.

Re-enactors from the Nothe Fort will also provide entertainment during the day along with a Punch and Judy show and Ed Hintze and Dorset for Singing.

The event offers the chance for firms to raise awareness and promote their products to locals and visitors while also doing some networking.

Exhibitors include the Nothe Fort, WOW and Visit Dorset with balloon man Captain Stupid on hand making balloons for children in return for a donation to Help for Heroes.

Yvonne Veitch, of the Nothe Fort, said: “I always worry that people don’t know about the event but so many people have turned up today.

“We have been looking for volunteers to help us with re-enactments and had a lot of interest.”

She added: “It is showing the best of the local area which is useful for visitors and other businesses.”

Anne McKechan, of WOW, said: “It is a great event with entertainment and information which is a boost for the area.”

Weymouth and Portland Borough Council tourism spokesman Ian Bruce said: “The Best of Dorset Show offers many local businesses and organisations a great opportunity to raise awareness of their services, generate new business and promote their activities and products.”

Exhibitors also included the Friends of the Pavilion, a group set up to support the theatre. The Pavilion was at risk of demolition but the council has decided it should be handed over to a community group to run.

Cathy Page-Nash from the Friends says they are willing to work with whichever group takes over.
