HUNDREDS of runners raced round the streets of Dorchester in aid of charity.

The chilly weather failed to stop the dedicated fundraisers who dressed to impress for the Dorchester and District Lions Club 31st annual fun run.

There were a few changes to the popular event this year, with runners now setting off from Dorchester Middle School in Coburg Road.

Over the years the event has raised more than £200,000 for good causes with this year’s total reaching around £4,000.

This time money will go towards helping young people in the community as well as charities chosen by individual entrants.

Andy Rose, of the club, said: “This year’s fun run proved yet again a very successful event.

“Around 140 people took part in our new timed 10km run, which was great.

“We have been very impressed by the efforts of everyone involved.”

Runners had the choice of a one- or two-mile route or a timed 10km that heads out to Maiden Castle.

The shorter routes are intended to cater for all ages and abilities with those taking part wearing fancy dress as they ran, walked or were pushed around the course.

Among those taking to the starting line was ‘Flying Nun’ Sister August-ine, who has been attending the event for more than 20 years and has personally raised more than £20,000 for the Dorchester Poverty Action Group and other causes.

All sponsored runners received a medal and the first and second placed runners in each age category got presented with a certificate.

Runner Fergus Johnson finished first in the timed 10km timed run while Frances Johnson was the fastest female in the new race.

Last year Lions were able to make donations to more than 60 local charities through money raised from the fun run, including donations of £500 each to four local cancer support groups.
