INHALING laughing gas at parties could damage your health, Weymouth and Portland environmental health officers have warned.

They also warn that people who permit such gas to be inhaled on their premises may be breaking the law.

Organisers of one Dorset festival had a notice served on them this summer to prevent the sale of nitrous oxide 'laughing gas' for recreational use at a dance event.

Now officers want to make sure the traditionally busy Christmas party period does not see the gas misused.

A spokesman said: "The effects from inhaling nitrous oxide are reported as including a floating sensation, with some people experiencing hearing or visual hallucinations and lack of co-ordination.

"There is also the risk of injury from falling over after inhalation or the possibility of suffocation from prolonged inhalation.

"Nitrous oxide has apparently been implicated in several deaths outside the UK.

"Reports also mention the longer-term health risks for frequent users including depression and vitamin B12 depletion, which may lead to neurological problems."

Officers also warn that manufacturers' packaging for gas cartridges states: 'Do not inhale!

'Misuse can be physically harmful and dangerous to your health.'
