THE Met Office has issued a yellow warning for heavy rain for Dorset.

The warning, which is valid until 6am on Wednesday, reads: "Further heavy showers are likely through the rest of Tuesday and particularly overnight into Wednesday, when organised bands of heavy showers and thunderstorms will move northeastwards, accompanied by squally winds.

"The public should be aware of the risk of disruption, mainly due to localised flooding, but also where squally winds occur.

The yellow "be prepared" warning covers south west England ijncluding Dorset.

The Chief Forecaster's assessment says: "The showers are expected to become aligned into bands moving northeast through Tuesday evening and overnight into Wednesday, with some thunderstorms leading to 10-15 mm of rain within an hour in places and 30 mm within 3 hours.

"An additional hazard will be localised very squally winds in association with the heavy showers and thunderstorms, with a risk of isolated 60 mph gusts along the south coast of England, most likely during the early hours of Wednesday."
