AMATEUR photographer Mick Rose is delighted after his atmospheric shot of fishermen on Chesil Beach won our first ever Summer Snaps contest.

The 60-year-old scooped first place with ‘Fishermen on Chesil Beach’ after beating 180 entries in the Dorset Echo competition in association with Abbotsbury Tourism.

Entries ranged from atmospheric sunsets to wildlife in the countryside, Weymouth harbour and children playing on the beach.

Civil servant Mick, who lives at Southill with wife Jackie, wins a season ticket with free entry to Abbotsbury Swannery, Abbotsbury Sub-Tropical Gardens and Abbotsbury Children’s Farm.

Abbotsbury Tourism general manager John Houston chose Mick’s entry from a shortlist of nine finalists.

Mr Houston said: “I was very impressed with the standard.

“I hope that some of them will take some of our floodlighting of the gardens which started on October 16 when Martin Clunes turned on the lights for our charity preview in aid of Weldmar Hospicecare.”

Mick has been a member of Weymouth Camera Club for 30 years.

He is a former naval fireman at the HMAS Osprey air station at the Portland navy base.

He captured the image of fishermen on Chesil Beach from the Cove on Portland in the early evening in the summer.

Mick said: “It was just a grab shot on the day really.

“When I saw it on the camera screen I knew it had possibilities with the scene receding into the distance.”

Mick has received accolades before for his photographs but is delighted to receive another in Summer Snaps.

He said: “I am pleased to have won.

“It is nice to be recognised.”

Mick used a Canon EOS lds mark II camera. He mainly shoots on aperture priority, F8 1250.

Other shots in the final shortlist included sunsets, animals, Weymouth Harbour and Durdle Door.
