THERE was disappointment for Weymouth and Portland sailors in the Tornado World Championships in Argentina.

Skandia Team GBR's crews struggled to gain control in the changeable conditions and muddy waters of San Isidro.

Weymouth and Portland's Rob Wilson and Mark Bulkeley finished in 20th position.

This was one place behind team-mates Leigh McMillan, from the Isle of Wight, and Southampton's Will Howden.

The 2005 silver medallists McMillan and Howden finished in 19th position after suffering a ripped spinnaker on the penultimate day, dashing any hopes of a comeback.

Weymouth catamaran sailor Hugh Styles and his crew Tom Peel finished back in 32nd place on Sunday.

Styles, who lives in Wyke Regis, battled it out against 13 Olympic medallists and 10 world champions in the nine-race series.

The pair were hoping to make their mark after coming third in November's warm-up competition - the Argentinean Tornado Championship.

Forty-seven Tornados took part at the Club Nautico in San Isidro, Argentina.

It was a disappointing result for British sailors who missed out on the medals at the final Olympic classes world championship of 2006.

The world title was won by the world number seven-ranked Australians Darren Bundock and Glenn Ashby. They beat Argentina's silver medallists Santiago Lange and Carlos Espinola by a 14-point margin.

European champions Roman Hagara and Hans Peter Steinacher claimed bronze for Austria.

Other Brits to compete included Andrew Walsh, of Cornwall, and Loughborough's Ed Barney, who took 23rd place.

Skandia Team GBR's youngest crew Chris Rashley and Marcus Lynch came 33rd.
