PORTLAND'S Easton Promise late-night shopping event was a huge success.

The lights twinkled on the Christmas tree in Easton Gardens, the shops and offices were ablaze with lights and decorations, the crowds were in festive mood and it all added up to a looking forward to Christmas' mood.

Town Mayor Tim Woodcock visited various shops and the charity stalls in the gardens where the Avalon Singers set the scene with songs and carols.

Paul Binfield and his family from Southwell were delighted with the event. He said: "This has put us in the festive spirit and we want to praise the organisers and the business community."

The Christmas spirit was also very much alive at Community 2000 and the centre was packed for most of the evening.

Brisk business was done at the craft stalls and free coffee and mince pies were served, courtesy of All Saints Church.
