REMEMBER, remember the fifth of November – with a big bonfire party on the beach.

Weymouth’s Guy Fawkes Night celebrations go off with a bang on November 5.

It’s one of the autumn’s big community events attracting thousands of families, and among the many firework and bonfire events going on in Dorset over the next week.

Last year it is estimated more than 15,000 people enjoyed the event in Weymouth, thanks to perfect weather conditions.

It is organised by Weymouth and Portland Borough Council’s tourism department which says the event is subject to weather conditions.

The fun on Tuesday starts at 2pm with a funfair in the Pavilion forecourt and stalls along the seafront. This is followed by the traditional children’s Guy Fawkes competition at 5.45pm in the Pavilion Theatre foyer. Prizes have been donated by the Pavilion and Alexandra Gardens.

Children wanting to enter the competition should meet in the foyer at 5.45pm with their entries. The competition will be judged by guests including Mayor of Weymouth and Portland Ray Banham.

The highlights of the night will be the lighting of the giant beach bonfire at 7pm and a fantastic firework display in Weymouth Bay at 7.20pm.

The council’s Tourism and Culture spokesman Ian Bruce said “Weymouth’s Big Guy Fawkes event is always a popular community event.

“It is free and we expect lots of families to fill Weymouth seafront and enjoy the fun atmosphere of this great British traditional event. I hope everyone comes early and supports our Pavilion and the businesses which are staying open to serve us all.”
