A RISING star of the British Sailing Team has moved to Weymouth.

Eilidh McIntyre, 19, is campaigning for the Rio 2016 Games with Sophie Weguelin in the 470 dinghy Olympic class.

Their campaign name ‘Team 3, 2, 1’ means three sails, two girls, one dream and they have already made waves in their first year racing together, achieving a gold, silver and three bronze medals from seven international regattas.

This week, Team Volvo member McIntyre moved from Hayling Island to Weymouth to be closer to the British Sailing Team base at Osprey Quay, Portland.

She said: “It’s really strange to think this time last year I was studying for A-level re-sits and only getting to go sailing on Saturdays. Now I’ve just completed my first year in full-time sailing with a 470 European bronze medal and fifth at the Worlds under my belt.”

McIntyre added: “It’s been a big week for me as I’ve moved out of home down to Weymouth.

“This is the first time I’ve lived away from home, but because I sailed a 470 on an adult circuit from a young age I’ve always had to be pretty self-sufficient.

“Having my new Volvo has been a huge help moving my bits and bobs down the coast.

“We’ve been enjoying some big breeze and the mild October in Weymouth, while the rest of our winter includes a fitness camp in Lanzarote in December before we head to Miami for more training and the ISAF World Cup regatta in January.”
