NATIONAL Theatre Live will broadcast the Donmar Warehouse’s production of Coriolanus at the Electric Palace in Bridport on Thursday, January 30.

Shakespeare’s searing tragedy of political manipulation and revenge sold out in 20 minutes when it went on sale last month and has opened to excellent reviews.

The show stars Tom Hiddleston (The Avengers, War Horse (film) in the title role and Mark Gatiss (Season’s Greetings at the National Theatre, BBC's Sherlock) as Menenius and is directed by the Donmar’s artistic director Josie Rourke.

In recent reviews Hiddleston’s performance is described as ‘magnificent’.

This rarely performed Shakespeare play has audiences on the edge of their seats as this tale of revenge is given stark staging allowing full focus on the intense performances of the actors.

The unrelenting anger of Coriolanus and scenes of devastation are given some relief with some ‘surprisingly funny’ scenes from the senate.

When an old adversary threatens Rome, the city calls once more on her hero and defender: Coriolanus.

But he has enemies at home too. Famine threatens the city, the citizens' hunger swells to an appetite for change, and on returning from the field Coriolanus must confront the march of realpolitik and the voice of an angry people.

Coriolanus is at the Electric Palace, Bridport, on Thursday, January 30 at 7pm. Tickets are £11 (£9 EP Friends) plus booking fee or £13 on door. Call the box office on 01308 424901 or visitelectricpalace.org.uk
