A KIND-hearted youngster held a charity bake sale to raise awareness of a rare cancer.

Hayley Seymour sold hundreds of cakes to her friends and classmates at Beechcroft St Pauls in Weymouth.

The event coincided with her ninth birthday and Hayley said she was ‘very pleased’ to help.

She said: “Everyone likes cakes so it seemed like the best thing to do.

“My auntie has stomach cancer so that’s why I chose the charity.

“She’s really brave and I just wanted to do something to help.”

Hayley raised £151.95, which was donated to the Alan Morement Memorial Fund (AMMF).

The charity provides support and information for people suffering from cholangiocarcinoma.

Headteacher Sarah Spraigue said Hayley’s actions were a great example of the charity ethos of the school.

She said: “I think helping others is really at the heart of Beechcroft, but Hayley, and some of our other pupils have started to go a step further and really take ownership of their ideas.

“In the past it’s come from the teachers and the schools, but now we have pupils coming up to us and wanting to organise things themselves.

“It’s brilliant to see and there’s been a great response from the whole school.”

Hayley wrote a letter to her teacher in January to ask if she could hold a bake sale.

Friends and family helped her cook the cakes.

Mum Sue said: “She just came downstairs one day with this letter and said she wanted to help because she knows my close friend, who she calls her aunty, is really suffering. It’s bitter sweet really because my friend is going through such a rough time.”

Sue added: “Hayley is so aware of things for her age and the school have been very good about letting her come in and hold it here. I’m very proud of her.”
