WEYMOUTH 53 WINCHESTER 40

WEYMOUTH didn’t really know what to expect going into the game but came out of the traps flying.

Early scores from Scott White and Josh Turner solidified Wey-mouth’s strong first quarter and they kept up the intensity to give themselves a 20-point lead at half-time.

With the home team rotating players to keep each squad member fresh for the rest of their fixtures, it meant that Weymouth didn’t really settle on their defence.

They were nearly pegged back as Winchester rallied to decrease the deficit, however, Weymouth’s first-half performance was too strong and they held on to finish with an impressive 53-point offensive effort.

Straight off the back of their first win, Weymouth had to focus on their next encounter with Kestrel, a team which were well known to be very strong throughout the basketball circuit.

Weymouth looked to exploit the fast break more and with solid attacking play from Max Gilmartin and a valiant effort from Rory Legg in defence, the seasiders were in the driving seat early on.

But the opposition kept coming back with some well-worked plays and Weymouth managed to grind out the rest of the first half and claimed a 16-12 advantage.

Both teams traded baskets in the third and fourth quarter, but scores from Jake Kinder and Josh Turner increased Wey-mouth’s advantage and a Matt Clarke-Williams basket sealed the tie.

WEYMOUTH knew they were in for a tough test against a young side who competed at a national level. But Weymouth jumped into an early lead with baskets from Turner and Gilmartin in the opening exchanges but, as the first half wore on, Kestrel worked their way into a 9-6 lead.

Determined to make it three wins out of three, Weymouth took the lead by a single point to set up a nail-biting last quarter.

Kestrel then put themselves in the ascendancy with a basket late on but with less than 30 seconds left on the clock, Kinder secured a rebound off of a missed shot and managed to score to seal a dramatic win.

Following all three victories, Kinder said: “It was a really tough set of games, especially playing all three games before any other team.

“We really stepped our game up and everyone should be proud of how they played. If we keep this up, we will be the team to beat in this competition.”
