A DORSET health provider is offering a new community-based service for people with brain injuries requiring rehabilitation care.
Dorset Healtchcare has awarded a contract to provide the service from July 1, meaning many patients will be able to receive clinical support and self-care packages closer to home.
Associate director Chris Kennedy explained: “It is important that we can have services that are available closer to home and that we encourage carers and patients to support themselves, with our support, in the community.
“We believe that community-based services lead to the best outcomes for our patients. We’re really pleased that NHS Dorset Clinical Commissioning Group has seen this opportunity for local people.
“We will now be able to provide a complete pathway of care for these patients near to their own homes, based on their needs and expectations.”
Director of service delivery for NHS Dorset CCG Jane Pike added: “Each year around 200 people in Dorset sustain a moderate acquired brain injury and may have behavioural, emotional and cognitive problems, requiring rehabilitation.
“We will be working closely with Dorset HealthCare.”
