DORSET ladies who laced up their trainers for Race for Life have raised more than £86,000.

The annual event at Kingston Maurward near Dorchester in May saw thousands of ladies taking on the 5km course in aid of Cancer Research UK.

Organisers encourage anyone still collecting their sponsorship to get it in as soon as possible.

Maxine Bateman, Race for Life event manager for the South West, said: “We want to say a heart-felt thanks to everyone who took part or supported our participants, as well as the wonderful volunteers who helped make it happen.

“Already the generosity of local people has raised an amazing £86,036 from the Dorchester event, and it would be amazing if we could reach £90,000.

“Last year, a third of the women who took part didn’t return any sponsorship money.

“As the number of people diagnosed with cancer in the South West continues to rise, and the economy tightens, we need the support of local people now more than ever.

“So, whatever the amount, we’re asking everyone to make every effort to return their sponsorship money as soon as possible. It can be paid in online, by phone or by cheque.”

• Sponsorship can be returned by calling Cancer Research UK on 0871 641 1111 or paid online via www.raceforlife.org.
