A FAMILY run card shop in Dorchester has signed off after more than 30 years.

Top Drawer has been a familiar presence in Dorchester for decades but closed its doors for the final time last week.

The business has been owned by Patricia and David Kaufman for the last 28 years, ater taking over from the previous occupants who initially established the card and gift venture. Patricia, 77, said: “Top Drawer has been such a big part of our lives.

“But in this tough climate, we just reached the point where it wasn’t feasible to carry on.”

The family say maintaining an independent business on the high street is never easy and they have seen many other traders set up shop and close during their time in the county town.

Over the years Patricia and David weathered many storms including recessions; competition from national card shops and cut price outlets; high business costs, and the increase in greeting cards online. Seven years ago, retaining the lease in their name, the couple retired and handed the running of Top Drawer over to their son Mark.

Patricia added: “When we took over, there were shelves full of little Smurf figurines – which seems a lifetime ago.

“After all this time it’s so sad to see the doors closing now.”

She also wanted to thank all those people who had supported the venture over the years.

Patricia said: “We have such loyal customers and many of them have been with us from the start. “Staff, past and present have all been brilliant, always giving 100 per cent commitment to the shop.

“The card reps we’ve worked with have been wonderful too. I feel we’ve made friends for life. “Over the years there have been very difficult times, but we’re focusing on the happy and fond memories.”

David, 78, said: “We’ve taken a lot of pride from being in the centre of this beautiful market town and now just want to take this opportunity to thank everyone for the support they gave us.”
