CANCER self-help centre The Living Tree has received a financial boost after being awarded funding by the Dorset Carers Support Project Fund.

The Living Tree is now well established as a self-help centre for people who have experienced cancer and their families or carers.

It was founded three years ago by Jo O’Farrell and Jo Millar, and is now flourishing.

Co-founder Jo Millar said: “The aim of The Living Tree is to offer friendship, creative activities, holistic therapies and relevant diet and lifestyle information for anyone with any cancer.”

The funding boost is for The Living Tree’s Carers Access Project – which aims to reach out to the families and carers of people with cancer to offer them free support and help.

The Living Tree is working in partnership with Dorset County Council to deliver the project.

Jo O’Farrell added: “The funding we have been awarded from the project will enable us to support more and more people with cancer and their families or carers through our events and activities.

“These include not only complementary health therapies but also singing, music and movement, mindfulness, diet and nutrition, creative arts and more.

“Living with cancer is expensive and our aim is always to offer our activities free of charge at the point of delivery. Our weekly meetings provide much needed information and support.” Some group members are at various stages in their experience of cancer but the group is open to anyone.

Anyone interested in finding out more about The Living Tree is welcome to join the group at the Friends Meeting House, South Street on Friday afternoons between 2pm and 4.30pm. On Friday, January 23 there will be a meditation and relaxation workshop from 10am until noon.
