ALTERNATIVE cinema screenings will kickstart 2015 for fans of ballet, opera and theatre.

Screenings at the Odeon cinema in Dorchester will include Andrea Chenier, the greatest of Giordano’s operas and Der Fliegende Hollander, Wagner’s first masterpiece, to romantic ballet Swan Lake.

The season begins with a broadcast live from The Royal Opera House of Andrea Chenier on Thursday, January 29 and Sunday, February 1.

This acclaimed opera accounts for the last years of Chenier, the French poet, before he was guillotined during the Reign of Terror in 1794.

Der Fliegende Hollander will be broadcast live from The Royal Opera House on Tuesday, February 24 and Sunday, March 1.

The story of a captain forced to sail the seas unless set free by the love of a woman, is one of Wagner’s most fascinating and visionary works.

National Theatre Live has announced a broadcast of Behind the Beautiful Forevers on Thursday March 12, directed by Rufus Norris and starring Meera Syal.

This tumultuous play looks beyond the luxury hotels of India and sheds light on the fragile slum dwellers surrounding the Mumbai airport.

To round off the pre-spring alternative screenings, Swan Lake by the Royal Ballet will be shown on Tuesday March 17.
