A BUS operator has welcomed five new buses to Dorset in a move to improve services for passengers.

Earlier this week, Damory announced that it will be investing in the new buses for Dorchester’s 1, 2 and 101 routes as well as the R71 Lyme Regis and R40 Bridport routes.

The announcement follows the launch of the operator’s refurbished X11 fleet.

A special event was held to launch the new solo buses – manufactured by Optare – at County Hall in Dorchester on Wednesday.

Damory managing director Andrew Wickham was joined at the event by Dorset County Council passenger transport manager Jan Stevenson.

Mr Wickham said: “Buses in Dorset, particularly across rural areas of the county, are an essential method of travel for many.

“These new buses are set to deliver exceptional performance, as well as offering environmental benefits including lower emissions.

“We would not have been able to embark on this commercial venture if it weren’t for the continued support of Dorset County Council.

“It’s a tremendous sign that people in the region value the services we offer here.”

Benefits of the new buses include seating for 30 people with seatbelts, wheelchair space and disabled access.

There are also two width options to the buses, including a narrow width alternative for smaller rural or country lanes.

Jan Stevenson, from Dorset County Council, said she is delighted that Damory has listened to the views of local people and the things they want and need from bus services in Dorset.

She added: “We have an excellent partnership and this is a demonstration of our working together to shape the future of public transport here.

“I’m very much looking forward to seeing these brand new buses as they transport local people across the region.”
