STAFF and shoppers at Sainsbury’s in Weymouth cycled the distance to Lapland to raise more than £400 for Wyvern Academy.

The Friends of Wyvern Aca-demy and Sainsbury’s staff met up to celebrate their fundraising efforts.

The store put on the event, which saw people cycling on static bikes the equivalent distance from Weymouth to Lapland, to help raise money for the Friends of Wyvern charity which is fund-raising for specialist playground equipment.

New Body Fitness from the Granby Industrial Estate loaned the bikes and they were set up in the store’s foyer.

The event raised £406.77 and Jackie Moon from the Wyvern group rode an impressive 23.5km.

Peter Brown from Sainsbury’s said that colleagues took time out during their working day to lend their support.

Sixth form students from Wyvern attended with their teach-ers and assistants and had a go on the bikes.

Mr Brown said: “We are working with Wyvern Academy for a little longer as our chosen charity and will be having more events soon – one being our annual charity football match versus Morrisons supermarket, which we hope to proceed with sometime after the close of the football season.

“Sainsbury’s Weymouth is always looking to make a positive difference in the community and our work with charity organis-ations and schools so far has been a great success.”
