More than 50 budding Flintoffs and Pietersens took part in a Weymouth indoor cricket tournament.

Nine schools from across the county turned out for the event at Budmouth Technology College.

Organiser Simon Talbot said: "The idea behind the project is for the young cricketers from the local area of Weymouth and Portland and even outside the catchment area to get as much experience as possible learning about the game, whether that be learning about cricket at first-class level, at minor counties level, at college level and even at club level.

"What we're trying to give them here at the college is the all-round experience of cricket and obviously this tournament is a big part of that."

Mr Talbot said he hoped the current Cricket World Cup would inspire young people to become involved in the sport.

He said: "Obviously with it being the world cup year and the world cup going on at the moment cricket is very prevalent in society.

"Despite the success of the Ashes a couple of years ago and the way England have gone down from that position it's great to try and encourage as many young people as possible to play."
