DORCHESTER'S chocolate factory could almost double in size if proposals to expand it are given the green light.

Bosses at House of Dorchester chocolates have unveiled plans to expand their Poundbury factory.

Planning permission for an extension to the factory was approved in 2002.

But in a new application to West Dorset District Council the agent for the firm says the latest proposals will allow delivery lorries to access and leave the site more easily as well as increase the factory production area.

The supporting statement from Lionel Gregory Architects Ltd said: "The existing factory has a total floor area of 2,693 metres square.

A further 2,470 metres square of floor space is planned, which will enable the existing factory production area to expand into rooms that are currently used for packing and storage.

"A new packing facility, print room and temperature controlled storage area will be provided in the extension, together with some additional office space.

"The new proposal will allow delivery vehicles to enter from Victor Jackson Avenue and exit through the proposed housing of Plot 2.83 on to Bridport Parkway, thereby removing the reversing manoeuvres that currently occur on site and annoy the neighbours."

The statement goes on to say that the proposed building was of the same width as the one already approved and would allow the yard area to be extended to create extra parking.

House of Dorchester was one of the first firms to move into Prince Charles' Poundbury.

The firm was founded more than 30 years ago and manufactures a range of chocolate products for clients that have included Buckingham Palace and the London Eye.

It also sells a range of products under the House of Dorchester Brand name.

Comments on the proposed expansion can be submitted to West Dorset District Council before April 20.
